Souphanouvong University (SU) was established in accordance with the Prime Minister Decree No. 169/PM dated on 4th November 2003 as a national university located LuangPrabang. SU officially held an inauguration ceremony on 5th November 2003 as LuangPrabang branch of National University of Lao PDR.
According to Decree on Organization and Function of SU No.099/PM dated 3rd April 2009, SU is one of five public higher education institutions, a national education and cultural centre supervised by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) with a focus for the northern provinces of Lao PDR. Its role is to conduct educational activities to produce academics, researchers, and scientists in various fields, conduct scientific research, preserve and promote the fine art and culture of the nation and the Lao multi ethnic people, and provide academic services to the society.
There are two campuses: the main campus covers a land area of 108 ha. It is located on the National Road No.13th North. This campus is composed of 5 faculties. The other campus, which is the Faculty of Education, covers a land area of 2 ha with a location at Ban Nasangveuy, Luang Prabang City a world heritage city for culture, history and sculpture.
